The Eyepatch
I recently heard an interesting tale concerning pirates and eyepatches. I'd assumed that the loss of an eye would be the logical reason. But another answer offered me was that when going below deck, into the darkness, they would switch the patch to the other eye. Thus their vision was already acclimatised to the dark making them less proned to unpleasant and often sharp surprises.
Interesting fact that, makes sense too.

Welcome to the Helen Flavel Foundation & Peduli Sesama Helen Flavel Foundation

We have been able to give 600 students a sponsorship since forming the Helen Flavel Foundation in March 2004. Education would be a gift that would last them a lifetime and help them throughout their lives. That the sponsorships concentrate on children who have parents who struggle literally to put rice and vegetables on the table each day.

We take an holistic view and help the entire family where possible, with housing, bedding, medical support and small business loans.

The Helen Flavel Foundation Learning Centre situated at Sambangan, Singaraja, Bali.
